It was announced in early 2007 that the Volkswagen cars currently being manufactured in China would lower the exhaust emission and fuel consumption by over twenty percent. Their deadline for fulfilling this obligation is the year 2010. This new development will coincide with the introduction of Volkswagen’s latest gearboxes and engines.

Volkswagen has committed to spending more than $600 million on its advanced engines. This decision was made in response to the Chinese government’s goal to cut energy per gross domestic product in the next few years. This is a measure that has been put in place in order to ensure environmental protection in a country where there are more and more cars being manufactured each year. In fact, China is slated to become the world’s largest automobile producer by the year 2020.

The Volkswagen Corporation has already taken its first steps by kick starting production on a new four cylinder, four valve engine in a joint venture with FAW (First Automotive Works Corporation), which is the second largest vehicle manufacturer in China.

The two new cars to feature these new improvements in China will be a mid sized sedan called the Magotan and a compact sedan called the Octavia.

By the year 2011, it is estimated that engine will be produced in 300,000 units on an annual basis. The plant also has a plan to begin producing a 2.0 liter engine in the near future. These engines will also be exported to Volkswagen’s markets overseas.
